Babies Were Born to Be Breastfed!

DID YOU KNOW???

  • Breastfeeding babies have fewer respiratory complications, GI illnesses, and ear infections, resulting in fewer doctor's visits. 
  • Breastfed babies have higher I.Q. scores, regardless of the amount of time they were breastfed.
  • Breastfed babies have fewer allergies.
  • Women who breastfeed have a lower risk of breast and ovarian cancer in later life.
  • Breast milk contains all the essential food that babies need for at least the first six months and, with food supplements, breastfeeding should be continued into the second year of life.
  • Breastfeeding saves health-care dollars!

Breastfeeding Resources in the Hudson Valley

  • IBCLCs are health care professionals certified by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners. They provide education for the prevention of breastfeeding problems, and they offer assistance when challenging situations occur.
  • If you need help with breastfeeding you can call the hospital where you give birth. Most hospitals have a Lactation Consultant on staff that can help.
  • La Leche League International offers free breastfeeding support. Pregnant women, nursing mothers and babies are welcome to attend their monthly meetings. Call your local leader for support and to get a current schedule. 1-800-LALECHE.
  • WIC can help you with breastfeeding (extra food vouchers, counseling, support).
